Un lointain souvenir

Description

In A distant memory, Me. (Sara Bagot) composes an architectural space that seems to belong as much to reality as to memory. The successive arches structure the canvas like a succession of passages, inviting the gaze to penetrate into a silent, almost unreal place. In the center, a vertical band of blue-gray crosses the composition and opens an enigmatic perspective, like a path connecting the present to a distant memory.

The geometric rigor of the architecture contrasts with the material effects that animate the lower part of the work. These freer, thicker touches evoke fragments of landscape, rocks, or the indistinct vestiges of an old image. Like memory, the forms clarify in places before dissolving and becoming elusive.

The palette, dominated by deep reds, bright pinks, and burgundy tones, envelops the scene with an almost unreal warmth. The coolness of the central blue-gray breaks this harmony and creates a tension between proximity and distance, softness and melancholy. The only perfectly circular element, the white disk suspended in space, can evoke a moon, a light, or a landmark remaining intact over time.

Through this composition, the artist does not represent a specific memory, but the sensation of memory itself: an inner place one believes to recognize without ever being able to truly reach it. It thus becomes an invitation to cross the threshold of one's own memory, between mental architecture, emotion, and reminiscence.
