Jan Voss, L’amateur, Aquatint, etching and drypoint in two colors on 250 gsm BFK Rives paper, 1994. 76 × 56 cm. Printer: Biel Genty, Méounes. Edition of 40.
Description
Over time, Jan Voss has developed a pictorial grammar entirely his own: a language made up of signs, silhouettes, and fragments of stories, which he arranges like modern hieroglyphs, visual poems open to each viewer’s interpretation. The word is foundational, often serving as the starting point for his compositions, yet it is through color, form, and the unexpected movement of the line that he reveals their inner music.
His works tell stories without imposing them, suggest without fixing meaning, and poeticize life by inviting us to read—not with words, but with our eyes, our hearts, and our memories. Lines dance, colors burst forth or whisper, while small figures, human or object-like, move through a world in perpetual transformation. Fragmentary scenes, fractured compositions, chromatic rhythms in which the freedom of gesture and the rigor of thought come together.
With Jan Voss, the gaze becomes nomadic. There is no single point of entry into the work, nor any imposed meaning. The eye wanders, slips, catches, rebounds, in a veritable visual gymnastics that brings the image to life. Abstract and figurative forms coexist and respond to one another, offering the viewer a space for mental and emotional play, at once intuitive and mysterious.
The artist does not seek to explain everything, but to suggest everything. He offers us a thread—Ariadne’s thread, or perhaps the thread of our own memories—and leaves us free to follow it, lose it, and find it again. Through this visual polyphony, he awakens sensations, smiles, and sometimes questions within us. He speaks to us through color, rhythm, and breath.
